Poetry is something that we often think of as being written and read in text, on paper, but for the majority of human history it has been passed down in speech. When the radio was invented, people had been used to the idea of reading texts written by old authors, distant in time or space, but the human voice was still something that most people only experienced directly. The magic, intimate immediacy of a human voice is something that hypnotized early radio audiences, and this magic is still felt today when we hear poems spoken out loud.
